Java Teachers Training in China — 2007 Summer

By , August 9, 2007 2:37 am

I am pleased to let you know that during the past two weeks, another 210 Java teachers from universities across China were refreshed with the latest advancements in Java and NetBeans. Among these teachers 139 of them will open a Java class in the coming Fall semester, and 137 (98.6%) of them indicated that they would be more than willing to use NetBeans as the required IDE for their courses.

The above-mentioned training was a 3 day intensive training. We offered the training at 7 cities simultaneously so that the teachers could choose to attend the training in an adjacent city. Below is our training schedule and content:

2007.07.24 — 07.28, Beijing (32), Shanghai (37), Harbin (15)
2007.07.28 — 08.01, Tianjin (26), Changsha (40), Shenzhen (27), Xi’An (33)

Day 0 — Registration
Day 1 AM — NetBeans IDE Introduction, New Features of Java 5 and 6, Java SE HOL
Day 1 PM — NetBeans IDE HOL with a Focus on Editor and Mattise
Day 2 AM — Java SE Demo with NetBeans, NetBeans Profiler, Plugin and Platform
Day 2 PM — Java EE 5 Overview, Java EE Development with NetBeans
Day 3 AM — Review and Exam, NetBeans Revisited
Day 3 PM — Java Education Conference, Training Survey
Day 4 — Training Closed

We rent classroom and computing facilities from local universities to carried out these trainings. These efforts significantly enhance our relationship with the universities. We paid for the teachers hotel and meal expense during their stay, but the teachers need to pay for their travel by themselves or their school. In addition, every teacher received a gift package from us which included a NetBeans book, and Solaris DVD, a Sun developer tools DVD, and a T-Shirt.

The teachers were more than thrilled by the content and format of these trainings. I would love to share with you some of the results from the training survey, as below:

210 — total number of teachers attended this training
12 — of them were familiar with NetBeans before this training
126 — of them will choose NetBeans as their preferred IDE
180 — of them will recommend NetBeans to their collegues and students
199 — of them would love to attend similar trainings in the future
139 — of them will open a Java class in the coming Fall semester
137 — out of these 139 will use NetBeans as the required IDE for the class
171 — of them will join the SDN China Java Teaching Assistance Program in FY08
81 — of them are willing to encourage their students to take SCJP

As of today, the SDN China team have trained a total number of 591 Java teachers across China (65 in FY05, 316 in FY07, 210 in FY08). All these teachers remain a good relationship with Sun through the SDN China Java Teaching Assistance program. Their presence at universities will continue to spread Sun’s product and technology among the academic developers in China.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the following person who made these trainings possible:

– Matt Thompson, for his long teram commitment and support for this project.
